The Home Buyer’s Cardinal Rule: To Thine Own Self Be True.
Shakespeare’s sage advice applies to you. Know yourself before you enter the real-estate game. This soul-searching is critical to a successful purchase. Ask yourself: Do I want to live here? Can I afford to live here? These are two major questions you need to weigh in deciding your course of action as a buyer.
Every neighbourhood comes with a different price range, as well as a specific lifestyle “brand.” Is there a grocery store nearby? What are the schools like? Where is the nearest dry cleaner? Is it TTC accessible? These so-called “little things” affect your quality of life day-in and day-out. The details matter. As a resident of Midtown, I know the “ins and outs” of this neighbourhood and can tell you all you need to know about living here. And if I cannot answer all your questions, I will find out for you.
Here’s a sample “homework assignment” I give all my clients:
Do research online to get an overview of the area;
Take a walk and drive through the neighbourhood to get a complete picture;
Once you’ve chosen the neighbourhood, visit it at least thrice! You will want to compare your experience on a crisp sunlit morning to a drab foggy afternoon;
Assess your budgetary and lifestyle needs, wants, must-haves and deal-breakers. Make a list!
